The Giovanni Podenzana Museum was founded when certain archeological artefacts were transferred from the Ubaldo Formentini Museum to a new location. Giovanni Podenanza (1864 – 1943) was a passionate collector of ethnographic artefacts, primarily those of Lunigian origin, but also those originating from far off places he had visited on his travels to Oceana, New Guinea, Japan and America.
As a consequence, the museum primarily houses objects dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum also exhibits artefacts left and donated by Count Giulio del Torre, geologist Giovanni Capellini, physiologist Davide Carazzi and historians Ubaldo Mazzini and Manfredo Giuliani.
The exhibition is divided into 6 sections; popular cult beliefs ; superstition and magical practices; jewels and household ornaments; clothing and personal items; domestic and work-related instruments; and traditional clothing.
